After becoming a widow, Ataru visits his mother-in-law, Hana, who lives alone in a rural area, accompanied by his wife, out of concern for her. Hana warmly welcomes them and puts on a strong front, which brings Ataru some relief, though occasionally her true expressions reveal a hint of loneliness. Hana's melancholic demeanor feels alluring, and despite knowing it's wrong, Ataru senses a certain charm about her. Hana's desires, having lost her husband and direction in life, unconsciously captivate Ataru.
